The Only Problem: Injuries

I just checked the Flyers website and saw that Simon Gagne needed hip surgery, which begs the question: how hurt were we during the first round series against Pittsburgh?

Look at who was hurt:

  • Mike Richards: TWO Shoulder surgeries after the season ended.
  • Eye Surgery: Simon Gagne and Danny Briere
  • Simon Gagne: Hip Surgery
  • Jeff Carter: Shoulder surgery (he played with a separated shoulder)

That’s only the injuries that I know about. Kimmo Timonen missed games in the playoffs as well. Hopefully the Flyers get some rest in the offseason and are healed and ready to go for 2009/10.

The Broad Street Bullies – 2009/10 Version

Can you believe that tomorrow it will be June 1st and the NHL Playoffs are still going on? I can’t stand the Penguins and Red Wings but there is no way I can pass up great playoff hockey, and so far Game 2 has been pretty good. While watching I started thinking about how great the Flyers will be next season. Let’s face it: Marc Andre Fleury stole two games from us in the first round and there is no doubt in my mind that we should be playing right now, but I can’t change what happened so it is time to look towards the future. I couldn’t be more excited!

If you watched Flyers hockey at the end of the season and in the playoffs there is no way you could miss the outstanding play of Claude Giroux, who has quickly become one of my favorite players to watch. The guy has eyes in the back of his head, he can stickhandle so well and has a great shot, and he has amazing vision and heart. I love this kid! He is the main reason why I am so excited for the season to start. I want to see what he can do in a full season.

The makeup of the Flyers is perfect for a Stanley Cup run. We have three great centers in Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Daniel Briere, which gives us three amazing lines that could go toe to toe with any line in the NHL. Richards, Gagne, and Knuble works great, as does Carter, Hartnell, and Lupul. What I can’t wait to see is Briere, Giroux, and a third player who can fit the line, such as Darroll Powe. Braydon Coburn and Matt Carle have become premier defensemen and Kimmo Timonen provides a great veteran presence. Luca Sbisa is still only 19 and who knows what to expect from #2 overall pick James Van Reimsdyk. Throw in Biron in goal and I think that the 2009/10 Flyers are the most complete team in the Eastern Conference. They remind me of this Detroit team, except much younger, which means that we have a good chance at going far in the playoffs for a while, and hopefully we can bring home the Stanley Cup!

I expect the Flyers to win the Atlantic Division this season as long as they stay healthy. If they play the way that they are capable of playing, I can see a Stanley Cup in the near future. I know I am biased, but hey, why not be optimistic?

It’s early but what do you think about the Flyers for next season?

76ers Hire Eddie Jordan

Out of the four major sports franchises in Philadelphia the one I follow the least is the Sixers. I’m just not a huge basketball guy. I love the college game, and as a Penn Stater I am proud to say that my Nittany Lions won the NIT Championship, but basketball is not my favorite sport.

With that said, I don’t have much to say about the hiring of Eddie Jordan as head coach of the 76ers. In today’s NBA coaches have been getting hired and fired before fans know their names, but hopefully Jordan can help our young nucleus of players to grow. Even though I detest the NBA, I do love watching the Sixers play. They try hard every night and play tough defense which leads to their great transition scoring. You don’t see teams in the NBA try hard night in and night out, but the Sixers have been an exception.

My Thoughts on the Team

Andre Iguodala – Hopefully 2009/10 will be the year that Andre Iguodala takes command and becomes a star. I know we have hoped that it would come sooner (preferably this year), but he hasn’t shown the superstar ability that we know he has in each game.
Andre Miller – Andre has been great for us, and I am looking forward to another great year out of him. He controls the game and has been a huge help to our younger players.
Thaddeus Young – Thad has the potential for a breakout year in 2009/10. He showed his potential this year. The sky is the limit for this kid.
Elton Brand – I think I can speak for everyone in Philadelphia when I say he doesn’t fit our system. His injuries have held him back and he didn’t work well in the system when he was healthy. If Eddie Jordan can fit him in and he is healthy, Elton could be a gamechanger.
Lou Williams – I love this kid, that’s all I need to say.
Samuel Dalembert – He has his downsides but he has always played tough even though he still doesn’t have the basketball IQ that he should have.

There you go. Most likely my longest Sixers post ever.

Why Start Broad Street Heroes?

As a lifelong Philly sports fan I have always had strong opinions regarding my favorite teams. This blog is my outlet to other fans. My friends know me as the definition of a “Philly Fan”, saying that I embody the characteristics of the stereotypical fan from the City of Brotherly Love. In this blog you will see the hometown bias. When things go bad, I will show my frustration. When things go well I will display the gratitude that only fans of Philly teams know how to show. We are the best fans in any league, and I believe that 100%.

I named this blog “Broad Street Heroes” because I feel that each player from the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles, and Sixers has been near and dear to our hearts, except maybe Adam Eaton, and they are certainly my heroes. I treat the Wachovia Center, the Linc, and Citizen’s Bank Park as my home away from home, and that is how it should be.

Right now I am focusing on the Phillies because, let’s face it, IT’S BASEBALL SEASON! I will try to throw in some Eagles, Flyers, and Sixers stuff every once in a while, and by the time September rolls around it will be balanced towards all four teams.

My goals in this blog:

  1. To discuss the daily events surrounding Philly Sports with fans.
  2. To interact with other fans in a courteous manner (this means allowing everyone to have their say…I love a heated argument)
  3. To change the perception of the Philly Sports fan because everyone should know what a true fan is.
  4. To have FUN. There is nothing greater than talking about sports and discussing your favorite teams, players, plays, etc.
  5. With that said, enjoy and let me know what you think…

Congratulations Jamie Moyer – Win #250!

The Phillies won their third straight game to bring their record to 28-20 and are still a half game up in the NL East. Jamie Moyer pitched 6 strong innings, allowing only one run against a strong Nationals lineup, to earn his 250th win in his illustrious major league career. Brad Lidge got his 3rd save of the series and now has 12 saves on the season as the Phillies won 4-2. This game was all about great pitching, great fielding, and timely hitting for the Phillies, who continue to play excellent baseball in May.

Some Notes on Today’s Game:

  • The Phillies had their 20th Sell Out of the season, surpassing 45,000 fans in attendance yet again.
  • Chris Coste played his first game of the series, going 2 for 2 with a solo home run and two walks.
  • Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each had triples for the Phillies (this reminded me of Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell doing the same thing in a game last season).
  • Josh Willingham continues to hit solo home runs for the Nationals with two solo shots today, the only runs scored by the Nationals.
