The 2009 Philles: 32-20; 4 Games up in the NL East

The Phillies have continued to steamroll through the majors this year, shutting out the league leading Dodgers tonight.  What do you think of the Phillies play this year so far and what are your expectations for the rest of the season?  Will we repeat?  With the way we are playing right now it looks like a possibility.

Cole Hamels is the Man

I guess pitching isn’t our weakness after all.  Our 5 starters have gone a combined 5-0 with 35 innings pitched while allowing only 5 earned runs in the last five games.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pitching staff pitch that well.

After letting up 6 runs in his last outing, King Cole came home to sunny California and treated his family and friends, as well as Phillies fans to a gem. Cole pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 5 batters while throwing less than 100 pitches.  What a start to a four game series against this “powerful” Dodgers lineup.
Some Notes on the Game:
  • Cole Hamels pitches his 5th career complete game and gets the shutout
  • Tonight’s shutout was the Phillies first one of the year
  • Jayson Werth finally got the bat on the ball
  • Carlos Ruiz continues to hit, while Jimmy Rollins continues to not hit (0 for 6 tonight)
  • Dodgers fan suck.  They come to the game late and leave early
  • Who was Heidi Strobel’s (Cole’s wife) friend?

King Cole, Cooler than the other side of the Pillow?

After letting up a leadoff double to Andre Ethier, “King” Cole Hamels retires the next three batters with relative ease (although Matt Kemp scared the bejesus out of me with a towering fly out).  We are through 6 innings in Los Angeles and Cole has pitched a gem thus far.

What do you think of the Phillies rotation so far this season and how do you think they will fare for the rest of the season?

RAUUUUUUUUUUL!

After striking out twice in the game, Raul Ibanez pays Kershaw back with an RBI double.  Kershaw’s night is over after a lot of pitches in not so many innings.  As I stated earlier, Kershaw can throw strikes but gets wild, which happened tonight.  Damnit Ryan, bad baserunning.  At least Ibanez drove one run in.  2-0 Phils with Eric Bruntlett up, let’s see what he can do.

Flyers News

Last night Comcast Sports Net stated that the Flyers have agreed to sign Ray Emery, meaning that Martin Biron’s era as the Flyers netminder is now history.  I think Marty was great here in Philly.  He wasn’t the best but he did have a hell of a 2008 playoff run when nobody thought we were going to be close to the Eastern Conference Finals.  I remember Emery in Ottawa a few years ago and I don’t know what to think about his play.  Hopefully playing in Russia has helped his game.  Let me hear your thoughts on the Flyers big move.
