Small Ball?

The Phillies manufacture a run after Chase Utley started off the inning with a double.  Jayson Werth actually did something productive and grounded out to move Chase over to third, and Ryan Howard did they rest by hitting a sacrifice fly.  1-0 Phils after 4 innings of play.  As I said before, the only thing we have to worry about is striking out, 5 Ks for Kershaw tonight…

By the way, isn’t being 3 1/2 games up on the Mets awesome?

We Have a Pitching Duel Tonight

Having seen Hamels and Kershaw both pitch in the Phillies vs. Dodgers series in May I knew this game would have the potential to be a hell of a pitching matchup.  Speaking of pitching, why did Kershaw try for two?  Doesn’t he know our defense is not to be messed with.  Eric Bruntlett with a great outfield assist (seriously? did I just say that) to keep the game scoreless through three innings.

The Phillies have to watch some pitches in their at bats.  They’re swinging at too many first pitches and have racked up some Ks for Kershaw, who had 13 strikeouts in a game earlier in the year.  I have a feeling that the last team to score will win this game, or the first team to make the other break into their bullpen.
Congrats to Randy Johnson on his 300th major league victory by the way.  Of course it was against my second favorite major league squad, the Nationals, who can always put a smile on my face when we play them.  Apparently Randy is quite the comedian as well, stating that he only needs 211 wins to tie Cy Young, what a jokester.

J.A. Happ, Ace of the Staff?

J.A. Happ pitched 7 shutout innings tonight as the Phillies completed the sweep of the Padres with a 5-1 victory.  Happ is now 4-0 with a 2.47 ERA, which I believe is leading the team in both categories.  It’s great to see our young pitchers doing so well, and if this keeps up then this will be a fun season.  Starting pitchers went 20 innings while letting up 4 total runs in the series, a testament to how far they have come since the beginning of the season.

Welcome back J.C. Romero!  J.C. threw 25 pitches tonight while getting four outs, shaking off the rust that accumulates from being suspended for 50 games.  Ryan Madson got the final two outs and we are on to Los Angeles.
The offense was effective yet again.  Ryan Howard is on fire, hitting another home run, his 16th of the season, to center field in the 1st inning.  The fielding was excellent yet again, especially the infield play by Feliz, Rollins, and Utley.
They one bad thing that came out of this game was Shane Victorino having to leave the game in the 6th inning with a hip strain.  What the hell is up with hip injuries these days?  First Chase last season, then Myers, and now Shane.  Hopefully it isn’t serious.
Some Notes from the game:
  • The Phillies have won 6 games in a row heading into a 4 game series against the Major League best Dodgers
  • With this win the Phillies have taken a 3 game lead in the NL East and are now 31-20 on the season
  • The series against the Dodgers now features the top two teams in the majors so far this season
On the Eagles front, we have more bad injury news regarding Brian Westbrook.  BWest needs surgery on the same ankle he injured last year.  Let’s hope that he recovers quickly because watching a game without BWest on the field just isn’t the same.

Phillies Win 10-5! Improve to 30-20 on the Season

Now that the Phils finally wrapped this game up, I am pleased to announce that J.C. Romero’s 50 game suspension is now OVER!  This should mean that we won’t need to see Mr. Lee Ho in a game again this season (it probably won’t happen but I can only hope).

To wrap up, Antonio Bastardo made his major league debut tonight and pitched a marvelous game.  He went 6 innings and racked up 5 K’s, allowing only one run on Adrian Gonzalez’s league leading 22nd home run.  Raul Ibanez celebrated his 37th birthday in style tonight, going 3 for 5 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.  He is now 2nd in the NL in home runs behind Gonzalez and he moved into first place in RBIs while also raising his batting average to .340, good for 5th place in the NL.  Ryan Howard had a couple RBIs to move into 3rd place.
After a disgrace of a 7th inning by Mr. Lee Ho, Chad Durbin tried to redeem himself after two dreadful outings and pitched a scoreless 8th before completely unraveling with 2 outs in the 9th.  He didn’t allow a run but he walked the bases loaded.  Ryan Madson had to come in to get the final out with the bases loaded, and of course he did just that on one pitch to get the…can you believe it, save.  Who thought we would have a save opportunity tonight?
With another loss by the Mets today, the Phillies, who improved to 10 games above .500 at 30-20 are now 2 1/2 games up in the NL East.  The .600 winning percentage is good for 2nd in the major leagues behind only the Dodgers, who we conveniently play in a four game series after we dispose of the Padres tomorrow night.

This is Ridiculous

As I have stated all year, signing Chan Ho Park was almost as bad as signing Adam Eaton to a 3 year contract, but yet again, nothing can beat the worst signing of all time.  This is terrible and really hard to watch, especially when you are on the East Coast and it’s 12:30.  After a brilliant debut by Antonio Bastardo, Mr. Lee Ho (my name for him until he gets waived) comes in and lets up 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning so far.  Pathetic.  J.C. can’t come back soon enough.  I can’t believe it’s been 50 games already.  Okay he got out of it.  5 run lead.  We can do this.
