Breaking News: Pedro Martinez Signs With Phillies

Yes, the deal is finished.  Pedro Martinez flew to Philly for a physical on Tuesday and was in good enough shape to allow the Phillies to offer him a 1 year $1 Million contract, with incentives of up to $1.5 Million.  This looks like a great deal for the Phillies, as they will get a veteran pitcher for next to nothing, which allows them to still be a major player for Roy Halladay.  With the addition of Pedro, the Phillies have a veteran who is nearing the end of his outstanding career.  Martinez has pitched for the Dodgers, Expos, Red Sox, and Mets, piling up 214 wins against only 99 losses.  He also helped lead the Red Sox to their first World Series in 86 years back in 2004.  Considering how cheap he was to get, there is really nothing to lose with this signing.  Good work Ruben Amaro, Jr. and the rest of the Phillies staff for working together and making this happen.

If the Phillies go out and get Halladay. Don’t give them Happ or Taylor. Give them Brett Myers and Jamie Moyer. Nobody ever talks about Jamie. He gives up like 5-6 runs per game. That cold kill us in October. Give them Myers and Moyer and we will have an awesome pitching staff. 1. Roy Halladay 2. Cole Hammels 3. J.A. Happ 4. Joe Blanton 5. Antonio Bastardo. Next year maybe Drabek can be our # 5 guy. Depending on how Joe Blanton does next year, We can make Antonio Bastardo our # 4 guy. If our startes can go 6-7 innings we can bring in Romero then Madson and then we can have Lidge close it out. If our Starters have a bad day we can give the ball to Chan Ho Park. The way he’s playing right now we can offord a bad night by a starter. Just please get rid of Jamies 80 mph Fastball. We have so many guys that could do better than Jamie and are only half as old.

I was listening to 950 AM in Philadelphia today and the “expert” on the show (I didn’t catch his name) believes that Roy Halladay will be a Phillie by August 1st. His reasoning: our farm system’s depth has given us options that no other team in the MLB has, which is why we are far and away the best candidate to land Halladay. Sounds like good news to me. As for Jamie, it’s kinda hard to say he has been terrible when he has the most wins on the team (9). When he has his control he can give us 6 or 7 strong innings, and when he can’t hit his spots then he gets shelled, it’s that simple. I’m content with Jamie right now and he is the veteran leader that everyone looks up to, something no other major league team has. Myers we can’t get rid of. He was starting to come into his own when he got hurt so we can’t give up on him just yet.
