What to do at #2? A 76ers Draft Preview

Probably the first time a ball bounced our way all season

Will the Sixers Turn to an Ohio Stater to fix their problems, or do they Favor a Yellow Jacket? Maybe they will take a risky bet on their Cousins to bring them back into contention…

..but enough with the overused puns. Thursday night is the 2010 NBA Draft, one of huge significance for our 76ers. Coming off of a disappointing 27-55 season the Sixers got some lottery luck (unlike our Flyers from 2007) and moved up in the draft to the #2 overall pick.  With this pick they should be able to take a high quality player that they could build around for years to come.

This stroke of luck (and bad play in the previous year) came at just the right time, with a new and highly motivated coach in Doug Collins and the departure of the un-fundamentally sound Samuel Dalembert.  The 76ers have a unique opportunity to start fresh, with a new coach and system to groom a young nucleus of players, and even for a person who isn’t a fan of the NBA you can’t help but have some hope for the Sixers in the coming seasons.

I hate Ohio State, but I'll take it

The consensus choice at this pick (after sensational freshman John Wall goes #1) is Evan Turner, the 6’7 shooting guard from Ohio State.  Turner has been compared to Scottie Pippen and is probably the most athletic and NBA ready player in this year’s underwhelming draft class.  The Sixers were the only team that Turner worked out for so it is highly likely that he will be the pick at #2, but with the departure of Samuel Dalembert there are now some questions about who the Sixers will take.

It has been reported that Doug Collins has fallen in love with Derrick Favors from Georgia Tech and that he also likes the immature, hot-headed, but extremely talented DeMarcus Cousins of Kentucky.  Either player could replace Dalembert at Center and would provide much more offensive skill than Slammin’ Sammy could ever provide.

When is the last time Sammy did that?

Favors, the highly talented Center from Georgia Tech, averaged 12.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 2.1 BPG, while Cousins, the extremely talented freshman from Kentucky, averaged 15.1 PPG, 9.8 RPG, and 1.8 BPG.  A side note on Cousins, when asked if he had ever been challenged in high school he said no.  When he was asked about college, he said no.  Let’s see what he thinks about the challenge that the NBA will bring, but that said, I do like his confidence.

With backcourt options like Jrue Holiday, Lou Williams, and Andre Iguodala and a frontcourt including Elton Brand, Thaddeus Young, Marreese Speights, Spencer Hawes, and Andreas Nocioni the Sixers could go any way with the 2nd pick in the draft.

Many analysts who covered the Sixers talked about Andre Iguodala playing out of position in Eddie Jordan’s scheme.  Picking Evan Turner and playing him at the shooting guard position would allow Iguodala to play his natural position as small forward.  With a lineup of Turner, Holiday, Iguodala, Brand/Young, and Speights/Hawes the 76ers could be much improved.

On the other hand, if the Sixers go for a big man in the draft it shows that they have confidence in the development of Jrue Holiday and Lou Williams and they trust them to run the backcourt.  The Sixers haven’t had a dominant big man since Dikembe Mutombo, but even then he was more of a defensive player and didn’t contribute much on offense.  Favors or Cousins could contribute offensively and grow into a strong defensive player.

It could be a while until we see this again

No matter what the Sixers do at #2, or even if they trade down, it will still be a while before they are contenders in the NBA.  The fact is, they are a young team with a new coach that needs to learn how to play as a cohesive unit, and that takes time.  Maybe they could land one of this year’s blockbuster free agents, but as of right now it looks like the Sixers will focus on making the best pick for their team.

Now I don’t know much about basketball (I prefer hockey, baseball, and football), but personally, I think the best pick would be Evan Turner.  As a Penn Stater I saw him tear up the Big Ten even after suffering a serious back injury.  Who knows what they will do though.  After Wall there aren’t any “sure things” in this draft, but Turner is the closest.  Let’s just hope that they pick their Kevin Durant and not their Greg Oden.

As a side note, I would like to mention the passing of former Sixer Manute Bol.  For many years I only knew of him because trivia questions frequently brought up his extraordinary height of 7’7.  I never knew much about the man besides what my dad told me: the fact that he was insanely tall and was a blocking machine, but he was much more than that.

As a native of Sudan, Bol did all he could to try and help his people out of a devastating situation.  His humanitarian efforts didn’t go unnoticed and he was widely regarded as one of the most genuine people in sports.  When watching a highlight clip of his accomplishments they showed a charity event where he even dressed up as a hockey player for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

If you’ve ever watched hockey you know how awkward tall people look when they aren’t comfortable on skates.  Imagine seeing a man over 7 1/2 feet tall on skates.  I, for one, commend him for the effort that he gave throughout his life and it’s sad that a man who gave so much passed away at such a young age.  Hopefully the Sixers will honor Manute Bol and continue his efforts during the season and show the world that the NBA does care.  Hopefully current players can stop playing with guns and drugs and instead focus their free time on things that are more important.

The Allen Iverson Saga

Hey guys! My name is Imran Farooqui and I’m a junior at Penn State. While Dave is about to go study abroad in Italy, I’m going to start helping out with the blog and give my insight on Philly sports, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Today I’m going to talk about the infamous Philadelphia superstar, Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson is one of the most controversial athletes that Philadelphia has ever seen, whether it was his on-court display of skills or off-court problems and dilemmas. Iverson would always keep us entertained and for that he was a very revered member of the Philadelphia elite athletes. In the late 1990s to early 2000s, Allen Iverson’s prolific scoring and his ability to carry a team on his shoulders drew national attention and his abilities helped the Sixers reach their first NBA finals in 2001, after about 15 years.

Off the court, Allen Iverson went through a roller coaster of family controversies, famous press moments or even his rapping days (not his brightest days). If you even follow basketball, you must remember the infamous “Practice” press conference that Allen Iverson had after he was benched for not coming to practice a couple times. Forever now, ESPN uses that press conference in conjunction with any situation that an NBA superstar goes through, just as a mockery. Allen Iverson will also be known for his use of firearms in front of regular citizens and even his one album that caught national acclaim for let’s say one day (Check out the one song he had “40 bars”). His tattoos define him, as he said once, and I believe that they also show his rebellious side. No matter what, Philadelphia still loved him.

The 10 years that Allen Iverson had with the Philadelphia 76ers was an up and down time. Each year, the Sixers front staff would try and pair him with a player, a scorer of sorts, that they thought would help their team in the end make it to the top. The list, in order of playing time with the 76ers, is Jerry Stackhouse, Derrick Coleman, Larry Hughes, Toni Kukoc, Keith Van Horn, Glenn Robinson, Chris Webber, and Andre Iguodala. Each player, before they became a part of the 76ers, was a great scorer and a presence in the NBA. However, each time they played with Allen Iverson would falter. The only time that it did not was that 2001 season when the starting lineup for the Sixers was Dikembe Mutombo, Tyrone Hill, Toni Kukoc, Eric Snow, and Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson would be too much of a factor for the team that the other players had to step aside in order to let him shine. It was a one-man show for Philadelphia and his name was A.I.

When the front office staff decided that enough was enough, Iverson was traded to Denver, where he was paired with Carmelo Anthony, another prolific scorer. However, the same story happened in Denver. The team could not handle two mega-superstars and though they went through the season and made it to the playoffs, they couldn’t coexist and were bounced immediately. Iverson’s tumultuous career continued onto Detroit and then a brief stint in Memphis before he realized what was happening, that he was not wanted anymore in this league and that he was falling out of the elite status of the NBA that he had for so long.

A month ago, the Sixers front office, after seeing one of the worst starts in franchise history and also the worst attendance amount in franchise history, decided they needed a boost in everything about the Sixers. When they saw A.I. on the market, they decided he could be their inspiration and maybe doing something magical for the team.

Now, after reading all of this, you may think that I dislike Allen Iverson and that I’ve never been a fan of his. It is however the opposite. I was always a huge fan of the way Allen Iverson played and he is one of my favorite players of all time. However, I feel that he has drawn out his career too much and that he has not learned how to handle being older and still playing in the NBA. The old veterans of the NBA start understanding their place in the NBA by instead of running the show, helping run it. For example, Shaquille O’Neal is a great example of someone who was a dominant force in the NBA but is now an athlete who knows he’s a piece of the puzzle instead of the main cornerstone and he works towards the bigger goal.

I also don’t like that the Sixers use Allen Iverson to only stir marketing and attendance points. The use of him as a one-hit wonder is unfortunate and just tarnishes his career evermore. I will always remember Allen Iverson as his former self and I hope that he can find his place in the NBA and keep his Hall of Fame career intact.

Feel free to comment on this and I hope to post more on the BroadStreetHeroes blog for you guys. Have a great holiday season and a happy new year!!

76ers Hire Eddie Jordan

Out of the four major sports franchises in Philadelphia the one I follow the least is the Sixers. I’m just not a huge basketball guy. I love the college game, and as a Penn Stater I am proud to say that my Nittany Lions won the NIT Championship, but basketball is not my favorite sport.

With that said, I don’t have much to say about the hiring of Eddie Jordan as head coach of the 76ers. In today’s NBA coaches have been getting hired and fired before fans know their names, but hopefully Jordan can help our young nucleus of players to grow. Even though I detest the NBA, I do love watching the Sixers play. They try hard every night and play tough defense which leads to their great transition scoring. You don’t see teams in the NBA try hard night in and night out, but the Sixers have been an exception.

My Thoughts on the Team

Andre Iguodala – Hopefully 2009/10 will be the year that Andre Iguodala takes command and becomes a star. I know we have hoped that it would come sooner (preferably this year), but he hasn’t shown the superstar ability that we know he has in each game.
Andre Miller – Andre has been great for us, and I am looking forward to another great year out of him. He controls the game and has been a huge help to our younger players.
Thaddeus Young – Thad has the potential for a breakout year in 2009/10. He showed his potential this year. The sky is the limit for this kid.
Elton Brand – I think I can speak for everyone in Philadelphia when I say he doesn’t fit our system. His injuries have held him back and he didn’t work well in the system when he was healthy. If Eddie Jordan can fit him in and he is healthy, Elton could be a gamechanger.
Lou Williams – I love this kid, that’s all I need to say.
Samuel Dalembert – He has his downsides but he has always played tough even though he still doesn’t have the basketball IQ that he should have.

There you go. Most likely my longest Sixers post ever.
