Phillies Win 7-0 on Happ’s Complete Game Shutout

The Phillies are back to their winning ways

The Phillies are back to their winning ways

J.A. Happ just showed Phillies management, coaches, players, and fans why he deserves a spot not only in the starting rotation for the rest of the season, but also as the fourth man in the playoff rotation. Tonight, Happ pitched 9 shutout innings for his 2nd complete game shutout of the season. He racked up a career high 10 strikeouts as well, showing that he can be dominant. On a night where Pedro Martinez pitched 6 strong innings in AA ball where he fanned 11 batters, J.A. Happ overshadowed with a more dominant performance against the Wild Card leading Rockies.

J.A. wasn’t the only story tonight. After a 6 game stretch where the Phillies bats were limp and the team went 1-5 while scoring a total of 13 runs, they finally started hitting. Each starter got a hit, including a double by Happ, and Jimmy Rollins, Pedro Feliz, and Jayson Werth hit homers for the Phils. Ryan Howard also recorded an RBI tonight, and Chase Utley got hit by a pitch for the 17th time this season and 100th time in his career.

The hot summer night was all the Phillies needed to get back on track in front of a crowd that acted as if tonight’s game was a playoff game. The atmosphere was absolutely electric as J.A. Happ struck out the final batter of the game, demonstrating poise that is needed out of a playoff pitcher.

Tomorrow afternoon Cliff Lee makes his home debut. He will have to do something extraordinary to overshadow his first start where he pitched a complete game while allowing only one run. Hopefully he is the competitive type and will only want to improve on his performance, and maybe try to beat out Happ’s outing from tonight.

Lucky Number 13: Jayson Werth Walkoff HR Wins It

Jayson Werth picked a good time for his first walk off HR.

Jayson Werth picked a good time for his first walk off HR.

What a time to hit your first walk off home run! After walks to Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth stepped up to the plate against hard throwing former Notre Dame tight end Jeff Samardzija, and he responded by crushing a fastball into the seats in left field. The Phillies win 4-1, their 10th straight win, and stay 6.5 games in front of the Braves in the NL East.

Hitting was not the story tonight. The Phillies pitching staff was brilliant tonight. Joe Blanton pitched 7 excellent innings. The bullpen pitched a 6 inning no hitter, highlighted by Chan Ho Park who pitched a perfect 3 innings of relief with 5 strikeouts, showing how dominant he has become.  I think his spectacular beard is intimidating hitters. Clay Condrey pitched for the first time since I don’t remember when and got his career high 6th win of the season. Madson and Lidge also pitched perfect innings in the game.

The Phillies have their longest winning streak (10 games) since 1991, and are now 53-38 on the season. This team is red hot and so much fun to watch right now. With the way we are playing the Blue Jays will be begging us to trade them something for Halladay.

Share your thoughts on tonight’s great pitcher’s duel, capped off by a 3 run shot by Jayson Werth!

Phillies Oust Lilly and Cubs Early: Win 10-1

The Phillies began their 3 game home series with the Chicago Cubs in style tonight on national television. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino got things rolling with back to back hits, then after two outs, Raul Ibanez hit a shot to dead center field to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. The Phillies never looked back. Rodrigo Lopez pitched a very solid game, going 6 strong innings while allowing 1 run and striking out 5 batters. Chad Durbin got the save by pitching three scoreless innings in relief. I learned something new tonight, if a reliever pitches three innings of relief to end a game he will earn a save no matter how big the lead is, which is why Durbin got the save in a 10-1 game.

Ryan Howard was the only Phillie who had a poor game, with three strikeouts in his first three at bats, but he hit a towering opposite field home run in the 8th inning to make up for his previous at bats. Jayson Werth just missed hitting a ball out and ended up going 0-3 in the game. Otherwise, the lineup was very impressive. Carlos Ruiz had a two run homer along with a RBI double.

The Phillies have gone 10-1 in their last 11 home games, and are 13-3 in July. This surge has given the Phillies a 52-38 record on the season, good enough for a 7 game lead in the NL East.

Party of Five: Jayson Werth Selected to All Star Game

I just got to State College, PA for our Annual Arts Festival at Penn State so I was unable to comment on today’s news until now.  I have to say, great job by Charlie Manuel picking Jayson “Show me what you’re” Werth to fill Beltran’s spot in the outfield for the All Star Game.  An all Phillie outfield is more than I could ask for, it should be a hell of a game to watch.  Isn’t it unbelieveable that our #2-6 hitters are in the game?

When it comes to tonight’s game, I’m happy we beat the Pirates because there are a ton of Pittsburgh fans here and I really didn’t want them to have more things to say to me on top of the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup.  Anyway, 7-1 on the homestand is great, we have five all stars, and life is good again in Philly.

Also, Coste to the Astros and Church for Francouer.  Don’t know what to say now, I just hope Francouer plays as bad as he did last year.  I can’t believe I missed the first no-hitter of 2009, Johnathan Sanchez?  Wow.  It sucks for him that Juan Uribe made an error or he would’ve had a perfect game.  Amazing.  I’m out.  Leave me some comments!

Phillies Win By 3 Touchdowns! Final Score: 22-1

The Phillies must not have thought that the 4th of July fireworks were enough because they had some fireworks of their own tonight.  The festivities started off early with a 10 run first inning for the Phillies that was capped off by a three run homer by Chase Utley.  Eight of those runs were with 2 outs.  They went on to hit four home runs in the game, including a Grand Slam by Jayson Werth to end the game.  The Phillies margin of victory was their largest since 1894.  The box score for this game is mind boggling:  http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=290706122.  The 1-2 combo of Rollins and Victorino went 7-9 with 3 walks, 5 RBIs, and 9 runs scored.  All of this was done against starter Johnny Cueto, who came into the game with the NL’s 4th best ERA.  He left the game after giving up 9 runs in 0.2 innings of work, a 121.5 ERA for the game.  Cole Hamels was almost an afterthought in this game, but he pitched beautifully.  Cole went 7 strong innings, letting up only 1 run on a solo home run.  If you want to watch the 1st inning again, it will be on Comcast from 10:44-11:15 tonight.
