Cliff Amazes in PhilLee Debut: Phils Win 5-1

Cliff Lee Scores a Run in His Phillies Debut: Also Pitched Well Tonight

Cliff Lee Scores a Run in His Phillies Debut: Also Pitched Well Tonight

Cliff Lee made Ruben Amaro, Jr. look like the smartest man in the league after his outstanding start tonight.  Aside from a 12 pitch walk to former teammate Ryan Garko, Lee was perfect through 5 1/3 innings.  For the next 3 2/3 innings Lee wasn’t any worse for the wear, pitching a complete game 4 hitter, allowing one run on a sacrifice fly.  Not only was Cliff unbelievably good on the mound, but he showed the batting prowess of someone accustomed to hitting, going 2 for 3 in the game with a run scored, missing a home run by inches.

All in all, Cliff Lee’s Phillies debut was perfect.  Nobody could’ve asked for more, and if this is a sign for things to come, I have to ask, “Who needs Roy Halladay?”  Not only was Cliff Lee great tonight, but the other player we got in the deal, Ben Francisco, had the best 1 for 4 night that I have ever seen.  He hammered the ball in all five of his at bats and got his first RBI as a Phillie, driving in Cliff Lee.  If this game was in Philly, Ben Francisco may have had 3 homers tonight with the way he hit the ball.

The Phillies bats were silent for the most part of the game, starting out 0/10 with runners in scoring position.  Through 6 innings they led 1-0 on a solo shot by Jayson Werth, but then the hitters got patient and the bats got hot.  After two walks, Ryan Howard got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a walk to Ibanez make it 2-0 Phillies.  Jayson Werth hit a single to drive in Utley and Howard, and the Phillies took a 4-0 lead.

The Phillies didn’t look back.  Cliff Lee finished the game off with his 3rd complete game in his last 4 starts, and he got the first Phillies complete game since Cole Hamels shut out the Dodgers earlier in the month.  The Phillies finish off July 20-7 to bring their record to 59-42!

Breaking News:  The Padres have traded former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy to the White Sox for four minor leaguers including stud pitcher Clayton Richard!

Now that the MLB trade deadline is officially over it seems like everyone has getting in on the action.  In the last hour so many players have changed teams that it is hard to keep track.  Here is a recap of the trades that have happened so far:

  • Boston Red Sox acquire C/1B Victor Martinez from Indians
  • Cincinnati Reds acquire 3B Scott Rolen
  • Red Sox send 1B Adam LaRoche to the Braves for 1B Casey Kotchman (terms not final)
  • Yankees acquire Jerry Hairston, Jr.
  • Rockies acquire reliever Joe Beimel
  • Twins acquire Orlando Cabrera
  • Tigers acquire LHP Jarrod Washburn
  • Pirates trade away more players, send pitchers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny to Cubs
  • Dodgers acquire reliever George Sherrill
  • Marlins acquire 1B Nick Johnson from Nationals

Rumors still circulating:

  • Possible trade between Dodgers and Padres that would send 1B Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers and 1B James Loney to the Padres.
  • Trade talks still seem to be “dead” for Roy Halladay

Who Says Nobody’s Perfect: Buehrle Tosses Perfect Game

Less than two weeks after Jonathan Sanchez pitched a no hitter for the Giants, Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox was perfect. That’s correct, 27 men came to the plate to face Buehrle, and 27 men left with unhappy looks on their faces. Buehrle, already the proud owner of a no hitter, can now say he has thrown one of the 18 perfect games in MLB history. Mark is now 11-3 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.28. As always, a perfect game isn’t purely on the pitcher. Gabe Kapler tried to play spoiler by hitting a towering drive to center field in the 9th inning, but DeWayne Wise made an amazing grab to preserve the perfect game, along with the no hitter and shutout.  I just had the pleasure of viewing that play and I couldn’t believe what I saw.  Truly incredible catch by Wise in center field, reaching his glove over the center field fence to save the perfect game for Buehrle.

It is truly an amazing feat to pitch a perfect game. I remember the last one that was thrown, when Randy Johnson mowed down the Atlanta Braves about five years ago. Mark Buehrle can now add this to his laundry list of accolades in the majors. He already has a World Series ring as part of the 2005 White Sox, he threw a no hitter in 2007, and now has a perfect game under his belt. Where is the love for this guy? He has a career 132-90 record as a starter and gets barely any recognition as one of the best pitchers in the game. With everyone talking about Roy Halladay, it’s about time that another pitcher stepped up. What’s even more impressive? He just pitched a perfect game against the defending AL Champion Rays. What a performance!

Lucky Number 13: Jayson Werth Walkoff HR Wins It

Jayson Werth picked a good time for his first walk off HR.

Jayson Werth picked a good time for his first walk off HR.

What a time to hit your first walk off home run! After walks to Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth stepped up to the plate against hard throwing former Notre Dame tight end Jeff Samardzija, and he responded by crushing a fastball into the seats in left field. The Phillies win 4-1, their 10th straight win, and stay 6.5 games in front of the Braves in the NL East.

Hitting was not the story tonight. The Phillies pitching staff was brilliant tonight. Joe Blanton pitched 7 excellent innings. The bullpen pitched a 6 inning no hitter, highlighted by Chan Ho Park who pitched a perfect 3 innings of relief with 5 strikeouts, showing how dominant he has become.  I think his spectacular beard is intimidating hitters. Clay Condrey pitched for the first time since I don’t remember when and got his career high 6th win of the season. Madson and Lidge also pitched perfect innings in the game.

The Phillies have their longest winning streak (10 games) since 1991, and are now 53-38 on the season. This team is red hot and so much fun to watch right now. With the way we are playing the Blue Jays will be begging us to trade them something for Halladay.

Share your thoughts on tonight’s great pitcher’s duel, capped off by a 3 run shot by Jayson Werth!

J.A. Happ Does It Again – Phillies Sweep Marlins

J.A. Happ has been in the major leagues for over a year now.  He made his major league debut on July 4, 2008 against Johan Santana and the Mets.  In that game Happ pitch 4 1/3 innings and earned a no-decision.  While filling in for Brett Myers in 2008, J.A. got a taste of what the big leagues was like, and he wanted more.

As a 26 year old rookie, J.A. Happ has made the most of his opportunity to be a starting pitcher for the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.  Through 12 starts this season, Happ is 7-0 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.  In each of his last five starts he has pitched at least 7 innings.  No other starter on the Phillies has done that so far this season.  Actually, no other starter has a goose egg in the loss column while winning 7 games.  The only pitcher close to that winning percentage is Jonathan Broxton of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is 6-0 as a reliever.  Not only is J.A. making a run at Rookie of the Year, but if he keeps up what he has been doing lately he will get consideration for the NL Cy Young.  Not since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 has a pitcher won the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Awards.

Tonight, Roy Halladay made a statement that he is still the ace that every team wants, pitching a complete game for his 11th win of the season, but Happ countered that with 7 innings of shutout ball.  Many analysts have brought up his name in a possible trade for Halladay.  At this point, there are two options to consider:  Is Happ having a Kyle Kendrick-esque season, or is he the real deal?  If he is indeed having a fluke year his trade value will never be higher.

After tonight’s win against the Marlins, Happ was asked about his time in Philadelphia so far, “I like pitching here…I want to be known as a guy they can count on, and that’s what I’m trying to work toward.”  I don’t know about you, but that is the attitude I want in a starting pitcher.  Someone who has something to prove and wants to be a leader.  Personally, I would not want to trade Happ.  He just has something about him that I like.  His composure on the mound is second to none.  He simply doesn’t get rattled.  In the 6th inning tonight, J.A. faced a bases loaded jam because of a Pedro Feliz error.  Happ wasn’t fazed and got out of the inning without a run crossing the plate.  Charlie Manuel had this to say about the performance, “When he gets in a jam like that, it’s good for him. When he gets out, it shows he keeps his composure.”

The Phillies are playing great baseball right now.  July seems to really agree with them.  By winning 12 of their last 13 games, the Phightin’ Phils have surged out to a 6 1/2 game lead in the NL East, and the way they are playing it doesn’t look good for the rest of the division.  Jimmy Rollins is batting .353 in the last 13 games, raising his batting average to .236.  So far this season there has only been one pitcher who has been the rock of the rotation throughout the good times and the bad, and that has been J.A. Happ.  When others have struggled, Happ has picked up the slack.  I don’t know what will happen come August, and I hope Happ is on the team when it really counts, but what he has given to this team so far is better than anyone could have asked for.
