Phillies Dominate

The All Star Break didn’t seem to effect the scorchingly hot Phillies.  Raul Ibanez, fresh of the DL responded to his critics that he was a “one half wonder” with two mammoth home runs, bringing his team leading total to 24.  Ryan Howard countered with his 23rd home run of the season, making him the quickest player to ever hit 200 career home runs.  Jamie Moyer answered his critics by pitching 7 innings of one hit ball.  As I said, when Jamie hits his spots he is very, very good.  Combined with the bullpen, the Phillies pitching staff pitched 9 shutout innings and allowed only one hit.  All in all I am very pleased with the start to the 2nd half.

Phillies Pour it on in 1st, Score 10 Runs

In case you missed the 1st inning of tonight’s Phillies vs. Reds game, here are some stats from the inning:

  • The Phillies scored 10 runs in the inning.  This is the 4th time they have done this in their history.
  • The Phillies sent 13 batters to the plate, and Ryan Howard was the only one to not reach base at least once.
  • Shane Victorino, Greg Dobbs, and Chase Utley each hit a home run.
  • Cole Hamels had his 3rd hit of the season, a 2 run double.
  • Reds starter Johnny Cueto’s line for the game: 0.2 innings, 9 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 121.5 ERA.
  • Cueto’s ERA for the season was raised from 2.69 (4th in the league) to 3.45 (17th).

As for the rest of the game, Cole Hamels has pitched excellent through 7 innings besides giving up a solo home run.  The Phillies tacked on eight more runs to bring the score to 18-1.  Jimmy Rollins is batting .526 (10-19) in his last 5 games with 5 walks and only one strikeout, hopefully a sign that he is out of his season long slump.  Shane Victorino is making his statement for that 33rd roster spot on the All Star team with a 4-5 night and 4 RBIs.
